National Service Scheme (NSS)

XIM University

“You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give”

About NSS

National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Student Youth Programme launched in 1969, on the birth centenary year of the Father of Nation – Mahatma Gandhi, by the Government of India. This Central Government sponsored scheme, conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, aims to inculcate amongst the students the value of giving back to the society and gain insight into real issues on ground which need to be addressed by the young blood of India.

NSS Motto

The motto of NSS: “Not me, but you” says a lot about the spirit of the scheme. In order to prepare the youth for real-life situations outside the four-walls of class-room, it is imperative for them to form a living contact with the community. By contributing to community service on voluntary basis, the students in academic institutions get opportunity to boost their wholesome personality development and gain exposure about the needs and problems of the community, thereby getting involved in the process of bringing reforms.

Objectives of NSS:

The objective of creating NSS units is to empower UG students and create future leaders in them. The primary aim of the NSS program is to develop the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary and community service. Students would gain skills in mobilizing community participation and acquire leadership qualities and democratic values. NSS strives to develop competencies among the volunteers:

  1. To understand the community in which the NSS volunteers work and to understand themselves in relation to their community
  1. To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve themselves in problem-solving exercises
  1. To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
  2. To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
  1. To gain skills in mobilizing community participation
  2. To acquire leadership qualities and democratic values
  3. To develop the capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters
  4. To practice national integration and social harmony
  5. To render service to the community while studying in an educational institution
  6. To arouse the social conscience among students; and
