Program Details

Environmental pollution has emerged as a major concern, affecting developed and developing countries. Pollution mainly affects human health followed by ecological damage and climate change. To address such challenges, multidisciplinary approach is required for a better environment. With this background, BSc. In Environmental Sciences (EVS) at XUB has been designed by incorporating both natural sciences and some subjects on social sciences. In addition, students have an opportunity for experiential learning through capstone projects, Summer Internship Projects (SIP) and Personal excellence for overall understanding of EVS in creating a Sustainable Future. B.Sc. EVS will act as a gateway to various higher studies like MBA in Sustainability Management, M.Sc. EVS, M.Phil EVS and Ph.D EVS.

The multi-Disciplinary nature helps B.Sc EVS graduates to opt for various career options from government to private sector and thus become eligible for specialized career opportunities like:

  • Environmental Management
  • Environmental Chemistry
  • Occupational Safety and Health
  • Water and Watershed
  • Wildlife Management
  • Forestry Management
  • Disaster Management
  • Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems
  • Sustainable Development
Program Objectives
The Program Objectives of B.Sc. EVS at XUB is to prepare students for “Peace and Justice & Care for Our Common Home” inspired by Laudato si’
  • To bring an awareness of the ecological crisis and transform the students into ecological citizens.
  • To enable students to develop skills to address environmental challenges.
  • To create environmental stewards capable of working at a local, national and global level for rewarding career and contribute to eco-justice.
Admission Procedure
Applicants are required to fill-up the application form online at: www.xub.edu.in. Candidates with minimum 55% marks in aggregate, in Class 12 of Science (Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology) can apply for the program. The eligible candidates will have to submit Statement of Purpose (SoP) and appear for personal interview. Final selection of the candidates will be on the basis of performance in SoP, personal interview, and academic records.
Pedagogy
There will be multiple teaching methods including interactive lecture sessions, case analysis, group discussions, interaction with experts and practitioners and use of videos, documentaries and films related to Sustainability. One of the major part of the pedagogy is through practical’s and for this XSOS has established state of the art laboratory known as Laboratory for Innovation Fostering Excellence (LIFE). LIFE is designed to support the research and academic activities in the field of environmental sciences.
DEGREE
The Xavier University will award the B. Sc in Environmental Sciences (Hons.) degree to the students who successfully complete classroom and field learning equivalent to 150 credits including Capstone and Internship and fulfil the prescribed academic requirements of the program. The degree is awarded at the Annual Convocation which is usually held in the month of April/May.
Program Structure

The program will be research based and will have the following components:

Summer Internship (Two Months in the Summer Vacation before start of 3rd Year)

Students will spend eight weeks in various organisations to learn and experience how the environmental concepts are being mainstreamed in both organisations and the community. The Summer Internship intends to equip the students focus on environmental and sustainability challenges in industry, government and civil society, and participate in the analysis and the problem-solving process.

Capstone Project (5 Credits 3rd year)

Each student must undertake this component in which they have to work on any of the research theme related to environmental sciences, declared by the faculty coordinator for the specific year. These are usually more “experiential” projects where students take what they’ve learned in the class and apply it to examine a specific idea in the form of an action project and write his/her learning and experiences which can add to development of knowledge, skill and behavioural change. Students meet with practitioners and work with real world clients in need of sustainable solutions for specific problems.
